Serves: 8

Ingredients

Apple Mixture:

  • 8-9 apples, peeled and sliced (a mixture of various baking apples adds the best flavor)

  • 1/4 lemon juice

  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1/2 tsp salt

Topping:

  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oatmeal

  • 1 1/4 cups flour

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp nutmeg

  • 3/4 cups butter, room temperature

Directions

Step 1.

Combine brown sugar, oatmeal, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut in butter until mixture resembles rice.

Step 2.

Peel, core and slice apples. Mix in lemon juice, cinnamon, cornstarch and salt until apples are completely coated.

Step 3.

Place prepared apples in the bottom of a 12 inch cast iron stock pot. Sprinkle topping mixture evenly over apples. Place lid on pot and place on rack over open campfire. Cover top of lid with hot coals. Cook for approximately 20-30 minutes, checking often. Cooking times will vary.
